Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about planning your perfect Andaman trip.

The best time to visit Andaman is between October and May. The weather is pleasant, seas are calm, and visibility for snorkeling and scuba is excellent. December–January is peak tourist season. June to September is monsoon — ferries are frequently cancelled, many resorts close, and rough seas make inter-island travel risky. If you're on a budget, the shoulder months of October and April offer great weather with fewer crowds and lower prices.
A 5 to 7 day trip is ideal for a well-rounded Andaman experience. This allows you to spend time in Port Blair (2 days), Havelock/Swaraj Dweep (2–3 days), and Neil Island/Shaheed Dweep (1–2 days). For deeper exploration including Baratang Island, Ross Island, or North Bay, plan for 8–10 days. Short 3-day trips are possible but only allow a Port Blair experience without island hopping.
A popular 5-day itinerary: Day 1–2: Port Blair — Cellular Jail, Ross Island, Corbyn's Cove Beach. Day 3–4: Havelock Island — Radhanagar Beach (Asia's best), snorkeling at Elephant Beach. Day 5: Neil Island — Natural Bridge, Bharatpur and Laxmanpur Beach, return to Port Blair for evening flight. Book ferries and hotels well in advance for this itinerary.
Budget estimates (per person, 5–6 days): Budget travel: ₹15,000–₹22,000 (guesthouses, economy ferries, local food). Mid-range: ₹28,000–₹40,000 (3-star hotels, premium ferries, activities). Luxury: ₹60,000+ (resort stays, private tours, scuba courses). Flights from major Indian cities (Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi) typically cost ₹5,000–₹15,000 return and are the biggest expense. Book flights 4–6 weeks in advance for best prices.
Inter-island travel is done by ferry (private speed boats). Major operators include Makruzz, Nautika, Sealink, ITT Majestic, Green Ocean, and Sonar Group. The Port Blair to Havelock route takes 90–120 minutes. There are also government ferries which are cheaper but slower (3–4 hours) and less reliable in scheduling. Always book private ferry tickets in advance, especially October–May. Carry your original photo ID at boarding — Aadhaar or Passport is mandatory.
Yes — ferries can be cancelled or delayed due to rough seas, bad weather, or port congestion. During monsoon season (June–September), cancellations are very common. Private operators like Makruzz and Nautika typically offer rescheduling or refunds in case of weather cancellations. Always keep a buffer day at the end of your trip before your return flight. Avoid same-day ferry + flight connections.
By Air: The fastest option. Direct flights operate from Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Mumbai to Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair. IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, and GoAir operate these routes. Flight duration is 2–2.5 hours from Chennai/Kolkata. By Ship: Government ships sail from Chennai, Kolkata, and Visakhapatnam to Port Blair — a 2.5 to 4 day journey. Ideal for adventure travelers or those transporting vehicles/goods.
No permit is required for Indian citizens to visit the main Andaman Islands including Port Blair, Havelock (Swaraj Dweep), Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep), Baratang, and North Andaman. However, tribal reserve areas like Jarawa Territory (Andaman Trunk Road) have convoy restrictions. A valid government photo ID (Aadhaar, Voter ID, or Passport) is required when checking into hotels and boarding ferries.
Foreign nationals need a valid Indian Visa but do NOT require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for the 30 major islands including Port Blair, Havelock, Neil Island, and Baratang. However, the Nicobar Islands remain restricted for all foreigners and most Indians. Citizens of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and China require special permissions. Since 2024, Indian e-visa holders can also enter through Port Blair seaport.
Yes — the Indian government renamed several islands in 2018. Key name changes: Port Blair → Sri Vijaya Puram, Havelock Island → Swaraj Dweep, Neil Island → Shaheed Dweep, Ross Island → Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island. However, the old names are still widely used in everyday conversation, on ferry tickets, and at tourist spots. Both names are generally accepted.
Yes — Andaman is one of India's best and safest scuba diving destinations. Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep) has the most dive centres offering PADI-certified courses for beginners and advanced dives for experienced divers. Popular dive sites include Elephant Beach, Dixon's Pinnacle, and Aquarium. Water visibility is excellent (20–40 meters) during October–May. No prior experience is needed for a beginner's "Discover Scuba Diving" session.
Top beaches in Andaman: Radhanagar Beach (Havelock) — rated among Asia's best, perfect for sunsets. Elephant Beach (Havelock) — best for snorkeling and water sports. Bharatpur Beach (Neil Island) — calm, crystal clear shallow water. Laxmanpur Beach (Neil Island) — stunning natural rock formations. Corbyn's Cove Beach (Port Blair) — closest to the city, ideal for evenings. Kalapathar Beach (Havelock) — peaceful, secluded, great for photography.
Yes! Andaman is one of the few places in India where you can witness bioluminescence — plankton that glow bright blue-green in the water at night. Havelock Island (Radhanagar and Kalapathar beaches) and Neil Island offer the best chances. The phenomenon is most visible during monsoon (June–September) but can be spotted at other times too. Low light pollution and new moon nights give the best experience. No tour needed — just walk to the beach after dark.
Absolutely — Andaman is one of India's top honeymoon destinations. Crystal-clear turquoise water, private beach resorts, candlelit seafood dinners, couples' snorkeling and diving, sunset cruises, and secluded beaches make it incredibly romantic. October to February is the best time for a honeymoon. Radhanagar Beach on Havelock Island is consistently rated as one of Asia's most romantic beaches. Stay at least 6–7 days to experience the magic fully.
Yes — Andaman is very family-friendly. Kids love the calm, shallow beaches of Neil Island (Bharatpur Beach), glass-bottom boat rides, snorkeling in shallow waters, the Cellular Jail sound-and-light show, North Bay coral viewing, and Jolly Buoy Island. Most activities have beginner and child-friendly options. The islands are safe, clean, and relaxed. Families typically enjoy 6–7 days covering Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil Island.
